WHAT IS EPILEPSY?

Colleen MacFarlane

Epilepsy is a seizure disorder. A person who has two or more unprovoked seizures (seizures caused by abnormal brain signals) is thought to have epilepsy. Often the cause of the seizure cannot be identified easily. Medication usually is needed to control the seizures. These abnormalities interfere with how brain cells send signals.

Medical scientists continue to research the cause of epilepsy. Scientists do know that epilepsy is associated with abnormalities in brain chemistry. These abnormalities interfere with how brain cells send signals to each other. Also, epilepsy tends to run in families, meaning it can be inherited.
