The daunting voyage across the ocean was tolerated much better by the older children compared to Agnes and Rosa. What must it have been like to have lived in 1866, and arrive in America, seeing Castle Garden for the first time? Vulnerable and frightened children, some with their families, and others not, were all subjected to physical exams, not knowing what could happen if one of their family members did not pass the exam. Below is a picture of the Saxonia, the actual ship that the Kerkers were on.
